Pump

The pump isn’t up for debate. You absolutely need one to regulate your pool water and filter out all the debris, algae, and other contaminants that build up over time. Cleaner

Pool cleaners come in all different shapes and sizes. Suction cleaners work like wet vacuum cleaners to scrub the sides and base of your pool and then suck up the debris they free, Pressure cleaners blast debris off the sides of your pool using the pumping system and then grab debris with a little suction. Robotic cleaners operate independently of your pumping system and don’t need much oversight, but they tend to be expensive.

Heater

The second two have higher running costs, but they’re also a lot more effective, especially once the air gets cold and the days become short. You can also enhance the heater’s effect by getting an automatic insulated pool cover that traps heat in the water.

Chemistry Controller

A chemistry controller is completely optional since you can always manage your pool chemistry yourself, but having one takes a lot of time and work out of your weekly pool maintenance. Simple models can monitor and adjust the pH balance, but advanced models can regulate every chemical in your pool and come with a wireless connection that lets you monitor the system remotely and order replacement chemicals automatically.
