Hot Tub Troubleshooting

Hot tub troubleshooting problems can be a concern for hot tub owners. Here we provide a few answers to common questions.

Having a hot tub can be a great investment. The hot tub or spa can provide hours of relaxation and enjoyment for your friends and family. To keep your hot tub working well, you’ll need to know how to troubleshoot the spa if there are any issues.

Here are some ways to keep your hot tub in working condition or quickly fix the problems before they turn into costly repairs.

Hot Tub Not Heating Troubleshooting

Hot Tub Troubleshooting Tips and Questions

If your hot tub isn’t heating properly, here are some tips to keep the water temperature comfortable.

Troubleshooting is a matter of using the thermostat properly and learning how to fix it. The thermostat is the device used to turn up the heat in the hot tub. Most new hot tub models use a temperature sensor. The sensor is connected to a circuit board. The top of the control panel is a remote control.

A number of spas and hot tubs from two decades ago used potentiometers and solid-state probes. Hot tubs that are 30 or 40 years old use mechanical thermostats that have a capillary bulb. If your hot tub thermostat has a knob instead of a red arrow that is lighted red, you can test the thermostat to make sure it’s working correctly.

If you have a new hot tub or space with a topside control panel, you’ll likely have a temperature sensor instead of a traditional thermostat. The sensor is connected to the main circuit board on the controller. The end of the probe divides into what is known as a thermowell.

To troubleshoot the heater, inspect the probe and cord to ensure there is no damage. Make sure the probe end is securely plugged in. If the topside controller shows the wrong temperature, this is a sign something is wrong with the sensor itself.

If the control is not properly displaying temperature, has water damage, or doesn’t respond when you input information, the topside control panel needs to be repaired.

Hot Tub Not Heating after Refill

If you notice the water in your hot tub isn’t heating up after you refill it, check for error messages. You’ll see them on your control panel, and they’ll tell you what the issue is.

You can even call a hot tub specialist and describe the problem to them, since you may be able to handle it over the phone.

Check to make sure there are no water leaks impeding the heating process. Hot tub water evaporates quickly due to the heat, but shouldn’t run out too quickly.

If the water is heating up too slowly or the heater keeps turning off, you’re having a water flow issue. If this is the case, you may see a message like “FLO” or “LF” on your control panel. Make sure your water heater is designed to turn off to prevent burnout. If you’re not sure, ask a professional for clarification.

Hot Tub Temperature Sensor Troubleshooting

The sensor of the hot tub sends messages to let you know which repairs to make. If your hot tub sensor detects cold water no matter how long the heater is running. You may have to reset the heater. If the sensors aren’t giving you the right messages about your hot tub, you may have to disconnect the sensor and reconnect it. Be sure everything is hooked up securely. If everything else is working well, it may be time to look into professional repairs.

Hot Tub Pump Not Working

If your hot tub makes a growling or rumbling noise, this means there’s a problem with the pump. The noise could also be an indication of the hot tub circulation pump not working. This may also be a sign you’ll soon have to deal with hot tub troubleshooting no power since the electric connections are likely out of whack.

The noise from the hot tub means the tub is struggling to get enough water in. If the pump is squealing or squeaking, there’s a chance that the bearings are loose. The pump may still be working properly for now, but not addressing these issues will make the noise worse and eventually stop the entire hot tub from working well.
