UV and Sunburn Protection Tips

Here comes the sun, and the Beatles might have been wrong; it won’t be “all right” if your family gets too much exposure to solar UV radiation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends giving your family total UV and sunburn protection both during the summer season as well as during the colder months when you decide to take that fabulous vacation where is it sunny, warm and beautiful. It is essential to protect you and your family with good sunblock, UV-blocking clothing, hats, and sunglasses.

The Risks

With the ongoing depletion of Earth’s ozone layer, it is important to protect your family from the health risks posed by UV radiation. Sunburn and tanning can’t be taken lightly. Your skin darkens as a response to serious cell damage that can cause many serious health conditions.

According to the CDC, only 15 minutes of unprotected exposure is all it takes to damage your skin cells. The risks are serious, but the solution is as simple as can be. Limit your family’s exposure and protect them from harmful UV rays with a combination of timing, quality UV-protective clothing, and a good sunscreen.  The sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation does more than cause skin damage, premature aging, and sunburn. UV rays can damage eyesight, cause cancerous melanoma and weaken or compromise immune system function.

Follow the local weather channel or install a weather app on your phone to see what the UV levels are in your location. With some planning and careful timing, both summer and winter vacation fun doesn’t have to be compromised by UV rays and sunburn.

Schedule outdoor activities, hikes, and swimming during the morning or early evening. At those times, the sun is less intense and the UV levels are lower. During the heat of the day, consider indoor attractions, museums or shopping excursions.

Sunblock

A good-quality sunblock is an important part of total UV protection. Sunblock protects skin with chemicals that keep the sun rays away from it. Scattering or reflecting the light keeps the UV radiation from damaging skin cells.

For best results, choose a natural sunblock that blocks both UVA and UVB radiation. Natural sunblocks containing zinc oxide and titanium oxide are effective and do not contain harsh chemicals and allergens found in synthetic sunblocks. Choose protection rated SPF 15 or higher, and combine with UV protective clothing and sunglasses for best results.

Don’t depend on sunscreen alone, however. water and perspiration reduce its effectiveness, and people often forget to reapply it after swimming.

UV Protective Clothes and Hats

A good hat and the right clothing add increased levels of protection that sunscreens can’t easily match. Many of the better beach and outdoor adventure clothing items contain specially manufactured materials that are light but highly effective UV barriers.

These special fabrics are lightweight, cool and available with UPF 50 ultraviolet protection rating. That means the material only allows 1/50 of the UVA and UVB rays to penetrate to the skin underneath. Look for hats, shirts, and shorts labeled with UPF ratings to make sure you are buying protective clothing. The cloth in UV-protective gear is specially treated and woven to protect against UV.

Sunglasses

Protect your eyes with quality sunglasses. Most of the shades available online or in your local shop provide adequate protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound shades provide the greatest protection.

Make sure your children wear quality sunglasses because children and young adults are more at risk for UV-damaged eyesight than older people. Protecting their eyes now substantially lowers the risk of serious eye conditions like glaucoma later in life.

Total UV and Sunburn Protection Conclusion

Summer and winter vacations are made for rest, relaxation and fun in the sun. With preparation and planning, that sun won’t spoil your family outings. Pack your sun-blocking arsenal and hit the road safely in the knowledge that your loved ones are protected from harmful UV rays.
