Protect Your Pool This Fall

As the weather begins to cool and the leaves begin to turn, there are some measures you should take to help protect your pool this fall, whether it be above ground or an in-ground pool in Shickshinny.

Caring for your pool is a year-round commitment, even if your pool does not receive as much use in the fall as it does during the summer. Consider the following to help keep your in-ground Shickshinny pool in top shape and ensure it will be ready for use next season.

How To Protect Your Pool

Maintain Your Pool’s Water Chemistry

Even though you may not use your in-ground Shickshinny pool as much, you should still maintain the pool’s proper water chemistry. This will prevent algae and other growth.

Keep Your Pool Clean

Now that you’re not using your pool every day, you should remove any floats and toys from the pool. It would be best to be diligent about keeping your water free of debris. This may be difficult as leaves begin to fall from the trees; you may have to skim your water’s surface daily. If leaves and other debris sink to the bottom of your pool, they will be difficult to remove. No debris should be in the pool when you close the pool for the winter.

Inspect Your Pool’s Cover

You should check your pool’s cover to ensure it is free of holes or tears. If you discover any, you may be able to patch and repair them. You’ll have ample time to purchase a replacement if you cannot. Placing a cover over your pool that does not fit properly or is damaged jeopardizes the chances of your pool operating correctly come next spring.

Preparing Your Pool for the Winter

Once you are ready to close your pool for the winter, you’ll need to lower the water level in your pool to prepare for freezing temperatures. It would help if you also considered purchasing a winterizing kit. These kits can prevent water from freezing while helping to maintain proper chemical balances throughout the winter. Lastly, review the proper procedures for your pool’s filtration system once your pool is shut down for the winter. You’ll want to clear water from the pipes. Water left in the pipes of your pool’s filtration system could freeze, proving very costly to repair.
