An above-ground pool is a circular or oval pool that doesn’t sit in the ground. Instead, it sits above the ground. There are many types and sizes of above-ground pools. Some people have above-ground pools surrounded by a deck. Other people have above-ground oval pools that use just a ladder to gain access.
When the season is over, inflatable pools can be folded up to store. However, above-ground pools with filters and pumping systems will remain in place and need to be closed properly to enjoy a quick start-up in the spring.
At What Temperature Do Pools Close?
In areas where the temperatures drop as fall approaches, all outdoor pools will close at some point. That’s because there are health risks when swimming in temperatures below a certain degree. If the water temperature falls below 50 degrees, you can’t swim very long before suffering from hypothermia. Hypothermia causes your body to lose heat quickly. And if left untreated, it can lead to death. The symptoms of hypothermia can include shivering, sleepiness, and feelings of extreme cold. Hypothermia is a dangerous condition.
Municipal pools used to close when the temperature dropped below 60 degrees for an extended period. Now, many municipal pools close by a specific date. Municipal pools usually open on Memorial Day weekend and close on Labor Day. Depending on where you live, you may be able to keep your pool open longer.
When Should I Close My Above Ground Pool?
Temperature
When you own your pool, you can decide when to close it. The pool industry has a saying, “Open your pool as early as possible and close the pool as late as possible.” In Pennsylvania, the average high and low doesn’t fall below 60 degrees until the end of September. Sometimes, however, it may end at the beginning of October. So, depending on the year, you may be able to leave your pool open until October. When the pool temperature consistently stays below 60 degrees, it’s time to close it.
Algae Growth
Another reason you should wait to close the pool is because of algae growth. Algae become dormant at 60 degrees. If you close your pool too early, you will have a green pool in the spring. You can wait to close it when the temperature stays at or below 60. That way, your pool will be ready in the spring when you are. You must also note that the proper pool chemical balance must be at the right level when closing.
Leaves
There is one more thing to consider when you’re thinking of closing your above ground pool: leaves. When the leaves start to change and fall, you want to make sure they don’t fall into your pool. Over time, debris can build up, and that makes it very difficult to keep your pool clean. Falling leaves also make it difficult for you to keep your pool balanced with chemicals. If there are a lot of leaves falling, it may be time to go ahead and close your pool early.
